It seems that its not tooooooo difficult to work out what’s driving the conversation in a scene.  All you have to do is look at the circumstances and the relationship and use your common sense.

But this week it became impossible.  Suddenly here was a scene that no amount of common sense would reveal anything that made sense of the conversation.

The only way we could make sense of it was to deconstruct the whole script.  Once the entire character’s journey was clear then the purpose of the conversation in this scene was evident.

It was a tricky one.


But an interesting lesson … eh!!

The position of a scene in the screenplay will always contribute significantly to understanding the purpose of a scene but on this occasion it was the only path to a clear understanding.
