Creative
Excellence
"Knowing
That It's Possible"
All actors, directors and in
fact every member of any audience has experienced seeing a performance
that is memorable for its power and truthfulness. Such a performance
may have gained its potency because of its relevance to our current
circumstances or it might be that the performance skills were
simply exceptional. Either way all actors' quest being able to
create a performance of similar potency to the one which stands
so tall in their memory.
Winning
or Losing
Everyone wants to be good at what they do. Some athletes take
drugs to help achieve their goals. It doesn't work that way for
the actor. The actor like the athlete needs to build the skills
and have a good performance process. And like the athlete (perhaps
more so) any number of circumstances may affect the outcome.
For the athlete this may mean the difference between winning
and losing. For the actor, other than for personal satisfaction,
it can often make very little difference at all. If the performance
is believable and the story told the audience wont miss that
extra bit of magic, for the job has been done. They will go home
satisfied.
Losing and
Losing
It is only the actor who quests perfection, that will feel let
down. So, what is to be gained by that? Only disappointment.
Instead, a more valuable achievement for the actor would be to
know that the gold medal performance could be achieved at any
moment.
The Greatest
Knowing that creative excellence is possible at any given time
is a great performance outcome. In fact imagine a performance
in which that actually was the case - a performance where at
any moment something exceptional might happen. Even if nothing
did eventuate the expectation that such a process would create
must provide an exceptional entertainment. A performance process
that knows anything is possible and is waiting in anticipation
would in fact be a great performance in itself. Think about it.
How good would that be!!
