PERFORMANCE PERSPECTIVES

"From Singer to Actor"

Dancers, musicians and singers say that The Rehearsal Room acting process has universal application.  It has been said many times that it is as relevant to those diverse career paths as it is to the acting one.

AKINA EDMONDS is a performer whose pathway was from singing into performance through music theatre.   She first attended The Rehearsal Room Workshops in January 2011 while performing in ‘Hairspray’ in Melbourne and returned again in 2013 after auditioning for ‘King Kong’.

I was interested to know how what she had learnt fitted in her journey so far (see below for video) ...

The process that AKINA is referring to is a simple and very effective technique that can be used when faced with doing a ‘stone-cold’ read.    Like all The Rehearsal Room processes it is a very efficient tool.

She mentions “dropping in a need” – this is referring to a character’s unconscious desire.  Although The Rehearsal Room process is strongly based on Stanislavski principles the traditional vocabulary isn’t used.  That’s because the way it has been taught over the decades blurs meaning and generates confusing impracticalities.  The aim of the processes used at The Rehearsal Room is to remove the confusions and simplify the choices so an actor can work efficiently and effectively.

At the end of 2013 AKINA was in Sydney rehearsing for “The Lion King” which will open on 12th December.
