August 2004 Bodacious Theatre presents; "Gorgeous Girls" An evening of four monologues which explore the very real lives of women in the unreal world of prostitution.
"45 Minutes Thankyou Gypsy" is a monologue written, produced and performed by Melbourne GP CAROLINE LLOYD. While not biographical, much of the substance comes from real life stories from her five years of experience working with women in the sex industry. Her compassionate understanding of her subjects teams with an actors eye for character and a sense of the absurd. The story details a country girls desperate fall into the dangerous, fascinating and forbidden world of prostitution and the tumultuous journey she takes. It deals with the themes of loss of innocence, independence, safety and survival. The second piece, "Yesterdays News", written by Peter Barnes and performed by CARMEL HYLAND, is a comedy about the life of a 113 year old woman, spanning 3 centuries. Her determination to control her own life and not end up like her mother, selling herself cheap leads to a life of high class prostitution, drug running and a visit from the Queen. Two other monologues, developed by TUILYN LIM and TANYA HANBY weave between these two stories, underpinning the themes of secret identities, illicit sex and the safety of money. For anyone who has ever wondered what goes on behind the windowless façade of the local brothel, this is an evening of warmth and honesty and a rare, intriguing insight into the cold, demanding, deceptive world of sex for sale.
